HEIRS

Who Gets the House?

A house hovers in the “Detroit” hall. Two independent theater ensembles from Graz - Das Planetenparty Prinzip and Theater im Bahnhof - have made a pact to tackle the topic of inheritance here.

16 people. Who is how rich? Who is likely to inherit how much? Who will get what? Can you make a clear list from this? An experiment.

Scenes, voices, bodies, past and present overlap between large groups and intimacy, hectic and silence.

Sometimes an inherited tea service is enough to describe the lost position in the family. One tells of Kitzbühel, of a lost relative, of the racial laws of the Nazis - and of how much a square meter of building land is worth today. Another shows a photo of a garbage-covered strip of green next to a warehouse: “That's why I don't talk to my family anymore, by the way.”

The sole heiress is excessively ashamed. Three take it in turns to fear poverty in old age. Later, fifty objects turn up - that too: inheritance. One hangs a deer antler in the house. The antlers swing above the performers - a symbol of the weight of heritage, a trophy, a burden, a monument. It seems dangerous and fragile at the same time. How to deal with it? Smash it up? Archive it? Upload it to the cloud? Or just leave it - it's already dead anyway.

Alongside inequality, conflict and greed lies something else: parting. Because inheritance begins with loss. Someone is no longer there. And has left something behind. Happiness and unhappiness.

Images arise in the audience, inevitably their own stories emerge.
Have you already written a will?
